A Higher Performance Standard

Performance fabric you can trust against your skin.

Every article independently tested free from BPA, PFAS, and 50+ harmful chemicals.

What We Believe

The clothes you stretch in, sweat in, recover in — should be the cleanest things you own. We built Definite Articles to make sure they are.

We independently test every finished product for BPA, PFAS, lead, formaldehyde, and dozens of other harmful substances. Our standard is non-detect: if the lab's instruments can find it, we don't use it.

What We Verify

Every product, tested clean.

Our screening covers the chemicals most commonly found in activewear fabrics. Here's what we test for — and why each one matters to your health.

BPA

✓ Non-detect

Common in recycled polyester. An endocrine disruptor linked to hormonal imbalance.

PFAS

✓ Non-detect

"Forever chemicals" that accumulate in the body and don't break down. We never apply any PFAS treatments (e.g., quick dry).

Phthalates

✓ Non-detect

Plasticizers used to soften fabric. Known endocrine disruptors. You'll find none in our gear.

Lead

✓ Non-detect

Can appear in dyes and pigments. A potent neurotoxin with no safe level. Our dyes are bluesign approved.

Formaldehyde

✓ Non-detect

Sometimes used for wrinkle resistance. A known carcinogen. We don't use it, and we prove it with every test.

Heavy Metals

✓ Non-detect

Cadmium, chromium, antimony, and others found in dyes and coatings. Just not ours.

Sustainable Synthetics

Not all synthetics are created equal.

The case
Synthetic fabrics offer the best performance available — stretch, moisture management, durability. That was never the debate.
The problem
Traditional synthetic are often treated with chemicals like PFAS and BPA and shed microplastics that last for centuries. These toxic microplastics enter waterways, accumulate in ecosystems, and make their way into our food chain.
Our answer
Our performance fabrics are infused with CiCLO® — an OEKO-TEX® certified fiber technology designed to accelerate biodegradability - significantly reducing long-term microplastic pollution. Every finished garment also undergoes independent testing to verify it's free of BPA, PFAS and 50+ other harmful substances.
We're not claiming perfection. We are claiming the highest standard available today.

CiCLO biodegradable technology

Lower Environmental Footprint

Synthetics that biodegrade.

Our fabrics use CiCLO® technology — natural compounds embedded throughout the fiber that attract microbes when discarded, breaking down at rates comparable to wool instead of persisting for centuries.Performance without environmental permanence.

Same stretch. Same durability. Built-in exit strategy.

Common Questions

Some Additional Detail.

Synthetics like polyester and nylon aren't inherently harmful — it's what they're treated with that matters. Chemical finishes are often applied to enhance performance. We skip all of that. No PFAS treatments, no chemical finishes. Just a safer synthetic, verified by independent testing.
To obtain a copy of our testing results, just email us at questions@definitearticles.com with the product(s) you'd like to see the testing results for and we'll send them to you (typically within 24 hrs).
Yes. Natural doesn't mean untreated. Cotton, wool, and other natural fabrics are routinely treated with PFAS, formaldehyde, and other harsh chemicals to add wrinkle resistance, moisture management, or durability. The fabric itself may be natural — the finish often isn't. That's why we test every finished article, including gear made with natural fabrics like our Highland Luxe Joggers.
Non-detect means the lab found nothing above its instrument's lowest measurable threshold. It's the strictest possible result — the chemical is either absent or exists in quantities too small to measure.
We test to non-detect, which means if the lab can find it, we don't use it. Many certifications allow "acceptable limits" of harmful chemicals. Our threshold is up to 100× stricter, depending on the substance. We also publish every result so you can see for yourself.
CiCLO works by embedding natural compounds throughout the synthetic fiber. When discarded fabrics reach landfill or ocean environments, microbes are attracted to these compounds and break down the fiber at rates comparable to wool — not centuries. Same stretch, same durability, with a built-in exit strategy.
During exercise, your pores are open, body temperature is elevated, and sweat creates a pathway for chemical absorption. BPA is an endocrine disruptor found in many recycled polyester fabrics. We screen for it in every batch and accept only non-detect results.
Yes. All of our suppliers meet our Supplier Code of Conduct. Our Founder has also personally visited each factory.
